Curriculum Intent

At Perrymount School we understand the importance of music and the role that it can play in life. Therefore, it is our intent to provide all of our children with a high-quality education that will engage and inspire them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. We want our children to gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. Our objective is to develop  curiosity for the subject and in turn increase their self-confidence, wellbeing, creativity and sense of achievement through transferrable skills.  Equally, it develops discipline, control and resilience.

At Perrymount music and performance is central to the culture of our school – through music we come together, learn, commemorate and celebrate. We aim to deliver high quality instrument and theory teaching as set out in the ISM Curriculum model and the National Curriculum and develop a life-long connection with music through performance, composition, the development of a musical vocabulary, the teaching of instrumental and technological skills, and opportunities to reflect upon music from a diverse array of genres, composers and cultures.

Curriculum Implementation

At Perrymount, the music curriculum ensures students, sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate.  This is embedded in weekly music lessons, taught by our specialist music teacher, as well as weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances and the learning of instruments. The fundamental principles of music are taught in our weekly lessons so that children are able to use the language of music to understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed though a skills based programme of study.  Children learn how to play instruments from some of the main instrument groups of wind, strings and percussion.  In doing so they understand the different principles of each method of creating notes, as well as reading basic music notation.  The direct teaching of specific instruments, music and songs allow children to understand style and genre as well as how to collaborate and participate with their peers both in and out of the school environment. For children who want to explore their musical talents further we also offer individual music lessons and an after school ‘rock band’ club.

Parents are welcomed into the school to attend musical performances as part of our celebration and class assemblies, music concerts and productions to share the musical ability we have at our school.  We also venture out of school to perform on bigger stages and to larger audiences by taking part in many music collaboration at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Blackheath Concert Hall and the Broadway Theatre Catford.
